My maltese got matted and instead of having him suffer I opted for a short hairdo, he seems to like it but...he doesn't look like a maltese anymore. Here is a pic (natural and not freshly combed), what do you think: should I take my time to let the hair grow back to have a ';maltese'; or just let him be :)

he sooo does look like a maltese and he is soooooo cute just leave him, he'll be fineDoes he still looks like a maltese with this crazy hair style :)?
I think he's adorable! And he looks like a really good bred Malty =) I like them with a little bit shorter hair because when it's long if you don't brush it even for one day then it looks ratty, plus as you found out, it tangles easily. If you like the longer look then maybe let it grow another inch but I bet you he LOVES the short do and it'll be easy for you too.
AH! He is Too Cute! And yes, he still looks like a Maltese.
I have papers on mine, but he has never had the long silky hair that my former Maltese had. His is more like cotton than silk and as my groomer says, ';you can just sit back and watch his hair mat';!
So I always keep him cut shorter and he is beautiful anyway!
My former Maltese had the long silky hair to the floor, and the texture of his hair made it easy to keep. It combed out easily and wasn't too much maintenance. But this one is completely different.
So don't worry. Do what works for you and your dog. He is very handsome!
A maltese dog is high maintenance. Did the beeder from whom you purchased the puppy not tell you that. Maltese need to be bathed and groomed every five days in order to avoid matting. Also you must bathe and groom the dog in expensive shampoo and conditioners, such as Joico, and the lesser product Pantene. You must contact a supplier, who, supplies dog shows not your local pet shop. You need an appropriate brush, comb and slicker. Unfortunately, you let the puppy mat and it will take a very long time to grow coat and have the puppy look like a maltese again. You should also wrap the coat in order to promote the growth. NEVER EVER do you brush, comb or deal with the coat unless it is slightly damp. Always use a dog drier to dry the coat. Perhaps, you should contact a school that teaches grooming. Do not take your dog to a groomer as they only care about the money they make, not the condition of the dog's coat. If you are sincere in what I say, call me. My name is Catherine and I have been involved with dog grooming in afghans for over forty years and countless dog shows. My e-mail address is connielady43 @yahoo.com and, I will help you. It distresses me terribly to see someone unable to cope with coat. I wish you the best and, again, e-mail me if you need help.
wow how cute is he, he looks clean and his coat is not that short has the casual look, and he would be a lot happier with out the matted hair. I have a little one as well and had to have him cut real short as he was so matted couldn't brush him or do any thing with it he looks cute, as he has a coat on so he is not cold. as long as he is loved he is happy and you are enjoying him that all they want ok
I think he looks adorable that way. He probably seems to like it anyway because he could have been uncomfortable with the matting and he feels freer. I can still tells he's a maltese.
His still looks like a maltese but it would be better to let him be what he used to be... Nah! you know? even us human have our own hairstyle so whatever you like for your dogs then its up to you.
He looks like an adorable happy maltese with a short hair cut!
Adorable!
Looks gorgeous to me. Just let him be if you think the hair will get matted again - he looks just fine.
i think he absolutely looks cute, keep it that way if its easier for you and him
Aw he looks adorable in that cut!
