Check the weather for your prom. If it's going to be rainy or hot, consider going with a secure updo -- go to stylists (in the mall, etc.) and ask to see their portfolio of prom haircuts. Even if you want to do it yourself, you can get some great ideas! I know you said nice and simple, but one great way to make an updo really romantic and lovely is to put in a flower that coordinates with your dress -- you can get fake flowers from Michael's or A.C. Moore for free, and they can really make a plain style seem sweet.
If the weather looks good and your hair never, ever frizzes, consider doing something down. Again, check out that stylist look-book! But really, I'd recommend an updo unless you're very self-conscious about it. It's nice to just not have to worry about your hair and just concentrate on having fun!
I love buns... but idk, it depends what kind of dress you have, and what looks best with your face shape, try out different suggestions, and see which one looks best on you, and your dress.
