I had my prom a few weeks ago and was having the exact same problem.
i had my hair curled and put into an updo
last year i bought a hair piece to go in it because my hairs very thin. maybe you should look into that
you put your hair in a pony tale and place the hair piece around your pony tale
then you use a curling iron and curl your hair into ringlets
and bobby pin them into the hair peice to blend them together
its really simply and easy and looks good too!.
this year
we didnt use the hair peice
but we used a curling iron and curled very small sections of my hair
and twisted the curls and then bobby pinned them onto the top of my head
and left two strands around my face in ringlet curls
and just hairsprayed my bangs to lay flat on my head.
here are the pictures from behind of my hair

then some girls wore the top portion of their hair pulled back and pinned
and then girled inlarge curls
and let the rest be ringlets resting on their shoulders

there is an unlimited amount of ways how to wear your hair
but im sure you will look great on prom night anyway about it!I need help figuring out a prom hair style.?
use good conditionr and make it soft then just straighten it
well if you have straight hair or always where your hair straight you could curl it and vice versa

curl your hair with the 3/4 inch iron all over. spray with a good hairspray to help the curl stay in. after you are done with the last curl let the curls set for about 5 min. so the hair can set and last longer. then mess with it and put different pieces up with bobby pins. finish with a cute hair accessory. the bangs, just leave them straight on the side.
You should put two half pony tails on the back of your head vertically and twist them different ways and pin them up so your hair would look like an ';S';
So first, you make a half up style, and then under that, get the rest of the hair and put it into another pony tail. So you basically have two pony tails, one on top of the other.
Second, you twist the hair on both pony tails half way, and pin it up, like you're making two buns.
Third, instead of finishing the two buns, you put the ends of the pony tails on top of the other bun. So for the top bun, the ending goes to the left (or right, depending on which way you twisted it) and for the bottom bun, the ends goes to the right. You swirl an S with your hair.
If you do it right, this is a really pretty hair style. You gotta try it. I made it up myself, so if you have any questions, you can add it into your details section.
